Designed in 1972, the GUBI Multi-Lite collection has remained relevant today because it offers something different: the light has the ability to change with the room around it. Designed by Danish architect Louis Weisdorf, the Multi-Lite was created to express his fascination with diversity and transformation. More than fifty years later, it still feels remarkably contemporary.
A simple but ingenious design, the Weisdorf’s Multi-Lite has two opposing outer shades that can be rotated independently. This allows the light to be directed upwards, downwards or asymmetrically without exposing the bulb. The result is a lamp that is both functional and sculptural, encouraging personal arrangement and interaction rather than a fixed, static form.
The GUBI Mutli-Lite: A Mid-Century Icon
The Best-Lite has a distinctly mid-century aesthetic, designed during the tail end of the mid-century modern period. It captures the 1970s fascination with futuristic designs, pushing boundaries of what an everyday object could look like. This futuristic influence is what gives the Best-Lite its unique character and keeps it feeling contemporary today.
Weisdorf's construction is deceptively simple: two cylindrical forms create the core of the lamp, a metal ring holds the composition together, and the quarter-spherical shades complete the design. From a distance, it reads as a clean geometric object. Up close, the shifting relationship between the shades creates depth, shadow and movement.
How to Style the GUBI Multi-Lite
Because of it’s unique appearance, the Best-Lite works well in both minimal and richly layered interiors. A single Multi-Lite Pendant can become the focal point above a dining table, while the Multi-Lite Table Lamp adds atmosphere to a sideboard, bedside table or living room shelf. The Multi-Lite Floor Lamp creates a sculptural presence beside a sofa, the Multi-Lite Wall Light brings character to hallways and reading corners, and the Multi-Lite Rechargeable Lamp carries the same iconic silhouette into flexible, portable use.
The collection is most successful when treated as architectural lighting rather than decoration alone. Use a pendant as the anchor, then repeat the form elsewhere in the room through a table or floor lamp. Because the shades can be repositioned, you can soften the mood for evening entertaining, direct light onto a reading chair, or create a more sculptural composition for decorative accent lighting.
Showroom tip: If you're using more than one Multi-Lite in a space, vary the shade positions rather than keeping them identical. The subtle differences create a more relaxed, collected look and highlight the flexibility that makes the design so enduring.
