At Holloways of Ludlow, we believe great design is at its best when seen in real homes. Our “Inside the Home of” series explores how creators and tastemakers use our furniture, lighting and homeware to shape their own spaces. Each feature inspires by showing how people can live with, style, and enjoy iconic pieces every day.

For this edition of our “Inside the Home of” series, we return to the Suffolk home of photographer and illustrator Sam Scales. Previously featured alongside Sophie in our series, the couple’s renovation project continues to evolve with the same thoughtful approach to colour, atmosphere and materiality. This time, the focus is on the Santa & Cole Cestita Bateria Portable Lamp. Sam demonstrates perfectly how the lamp’s softly glowing design can be moved effortlessly throughout the home, bringing warmth and character to every setting it is placed.

Sam and Sophie’s home is calm and atmospheric. Each room is layered with natural textures, muted tones and carefully chosen lighting. They have created spaces that feel intimate with a slightly cinematic appeal. This is unsurprising given Sam’s background in photography. Throughout the renovation, there’s a strong emphasis on mood, allowing everyday objects and lived-in details to shape the character of their home.

The Cestita Bateria Portable Lamp feels particularly suited to this environment. Its warm glow softens darker corners, while the combination of opal glass and wood introduces a natural tactility that complements Sam’s understated interiors beautifully. When the light is switched on, it highlights textural details. When it’s off, it works as a decorative piece.

Designed to move easily from room to room, the Santa & Cole Cestita Bateria Portable Lamp brings flexibility as well as atmosphere. In Sam’s home, it appears across a variety of spaces, from kitchen worktops to quiet evening corners, each time creating a completely different mood. Here, Sam demonstrates the lamp’s versatility and its ability to build mood and set the scene.

The Cestita Bateria lamp is a modern, cordless rendition of Miguel Milá’s 1962 Cestita lamp. The design was based on lanterns seen outside Mediterranean coastal and country properties. The frosted opal glass globe sits inside a wooden basket, and this is where the lamp takes its name, as “cesta” is the Spanish word for “basket”. Its handle invites you to pick the lamp and carry it with you. The portable nature of the design also suits the rhythm of daily living, adapting naturally as spaces shift from functional to relaxed throughout the day.

Sam’s styling highlights how versatile portable lighting can be within the home. Rather than treating the lamp as a fixed object, he uses it dynamically, moving it where warmth and atmosphere are needed most. Styled against earthy tones, tiled surfaces and natural wood, the lamp feels both contemporary and timeless.

Beyond the interior, Sam is also capturing the lamp outdoors amongst the Suffolk landscape, exploring how portable lighting can shape atmosphere beyond the home. Whether placed on top of an outdoor table at dusk or carried into quieter corners of the countryside, the Cestita Bateria lamp brings the same sense of warmth and intimacy to exterior spaces as it does in the home.

Sam Scales’ Suffolk home is a reminder that lighting is often what gives a space its emotional quality. The Santa & Cole Cestita Bateria Portable Lamp moves effortlessly through his interior, creating moments of softness, warmth and calm wherever it’s placed. Playing with light, Sam has captured the cinematic nature that lighting and shadow can bring to a home.
