Meet the Designer

Hans J. Wegner was a Danish furniture designer known for his mastery of wood craftsmanship and his modernist approach to design. Born in 1914 in Tønder, Denmark, Wegner initially trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. After graduating, he worked as a furniture designer for various firms before establishing his own studio in 1943. Wegner's designs are characterized by their simplicity, functionality, and organic forms, with an emphasis on the natural beauty of wood.

One of Wegner's most iconic designs is the CH24 Wishbone Chair, which he created for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1949. The chair's distinctive Y-shaped backrest and hand-woven paper cord seat have made it an enduring classic, and it is widely regarded as one of the most important designs of the 20th century. Wegner's work has been exhibited in museums around the world, and he has received numerous awards for his contributions to design. Today, Wegner's designs continue to be produced by Carl Hansen & Søn and are sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts alike.
