USM is a Swiss design company known worldwide for its precise, modular furniture system that has become a benchmark for timeless, functional design. Founded in 1885 in Münsingen, Switzerland, USM began as an ironmongery and metalworking company. Its transformation into a modern design icon began in the 1960s, when Paul Schärer Jr. commissioned architect Fritz Haller to develop a flexible steel construction system for a new factory and office building. That architectural concept later evolved into the USM Haller furniture system, defined by its chrome-plated steel tubes, precision-engineered connectors and powder-coated panels.
At the heart of USM is the idea of adaptability. The modular system is designed to grow, change and reconfigure over time, making it as relevant in contemporary homes as it is in offices and public spaces. Every piece is built with long-term use in mind, allowing components to be added, rearranged or reused rather than replaced. This enduring flexibility has secured USM a place in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, recognising its significance in modern design history.
Sustainability is integral to USM’s philosophy. The furniture is made from durable, recyclable steel, finished with solvent-free powder coating and designed to last for generations. USM has received Greenguard certification and the Cradle-to-Cradle® label, reflecting its commitment to environmental responsibility. Still manufactured in Switzerland today, USM continues to balance engineering precision with thoughtful design, creating furniture that evolves with its users while maintaining a clear, timeless identity.
