Grand Designs is a show we look forward to watching, not only to see people’s architectural dreams come into fruition but also for the pure inspiration it gives us. 2025’s series brought many inspiring builds, but two were particularly exciting for us.

HAY’s iconic Palissade outdoor furniture was supplied by us and featured in two Grand Designs projects: Southwater and Hackney Downs. It’s no surprise HAY Palissade was chosen, as its architectural form really complements contemporary builds. The two properties featured in the show have very different styles, so it's wonderful to see how Palissade works in each setting.

Grand Designs – Southwater

This modular home, set on a plot in West Sussex, has a strikingly modern appearance. The project was designed by architects Koto, who created a sustainable, design-led family home. The single-storey dwelling looks out across expansive views across the fields.

Clad in black charred UK timber, the Southwater project stands out among the hedgerows and green space it sits within; however, instead of looking imposing, the building nestles into its surroundings, working harmoniously with the landscape.

We supplied two iron red HAY Palissade Lounge Chairs and a matching Palissade Ottoman, which sit out on the blackened decking. The iron red contrasts beautifully with the black wood and green surroundings. The low profile of the chairs and ottoman complements the single-storey home, appearing well-proportioned on the deck. The building’s linear nature works well with the clean lines and slat design of the Palissade furniture.

Grand Designs - Hackney Downs

Grand Designs revisited this Hackney Downs project from four years ago. The now finished home, named ‘Twin House’, is situated on a small twin garage plot in East London. Graeme Williamson Architects ingeniously built upwards and down into the basement, taking full advantage of the plot’s small footprint and creating plenty of extra space for this family home.

The house is clad in red cement board, giving it a striking appearance. It creates a graphic, sculptural form that looks one of a kind in its surroundings. Inside, a curved staircase contrasts with linear detail, creating the appearance of a flowing open space.

Again, iron red HAY Palissade was supplied by us. It’s easy to see why this colour was chosen, as it matches almost perfectly with the red cement cladding on the house. Placed in a courtyard, two HAY Palissade Lounge Chairs and a Palissade Ottoman create a spot to relax. Wooden slats in the courtyard complement the slat design of Palissade, whilst terracotta pots tone in perfectly and add warmth.

Although both properties feature iron red HAY Palissade, they each use the garden furniture differently to support their designs. Southwater has chosen to create a contrast in colour. The pop of colour works to draw attention to the beautiful black wood cladding whilst also breaking the solid nature of the design. In Hackney Downs, the iron red works in harmony with the red cement cladding, making it even more of a feature. The architectural shape of Palissade works perfectly with the contemporary nature of both buildings.

These two projects prove that HAY Palissade garden furniture is a versatile design that can enhance a variety of outdoor settings. It’s no surprise this garden furniture collection was chosen to feature on Grand Designs, as it adds a subtle flair to each property without taking attention away from the architectural builds.

We love to see how the furniture and lighting supplied by us are styled within a home and enjoyed by our customers. If you have a design project of your own coming up, feel free to get in touch with us.

HAY Palissade also works in more traditional outdoor settings. View it in the garden of Matthew Porter or see how it’s been styled at Purbeck Cottage.
