The Story Behind the PH 5 Pendant
Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) was a Danish designer, architect, and writer whose childhood experiences with gas lighting, which created warm atmospheric illumination, sparked his early interest in light design.
He didn’t like the harsh, unfiltered glare of early electric bulbs and found their illumination stark and uncomfortable.
In the 1920s, he began experimenting with multi-shade systems to create soft, evenly diffused light that was warm and inviting. His main goal was to improve lighting quality by controlling glare and directing light effectively.
In 1924, he began collaborating with the Danish lighting company Louis Poulsen, leading to a series of ground breaking and unique designs.
This collaboration resulted in the PH system, an innovative approach to lighting that balanced function and aesthetics.
This work laid the foundation for his masterpiece, the PH 5 Pendant Lamp.
How the PH Lamp works
The PH system is based on a mathematical approach to controlling light diffusion. The signature three-shade design that unites the collection directs light downwards and sideways, eliminating glare while creating ambient illumination.
It was first introduced in 1925 at an international exhibition in Paris, where it won a gold medal.
The PH 5 Pendant Light: A design classic
Designed in 1958, The PH lamp was an evolution of his earlier multi-shade system. Designed for the Langelinie Pavilion in Copenhagen.
Its name comes from the 50 cm diameter of its main shade.
It was created to adapt to changing light sources, so the optimal light quality was maintained, despite variations in bulb technology.
Its innovation comes from light diffusion. Multiple layered shades direct light both downward and laterally, which eliminates glare. Additionally, the red and blue reflectors help balance the yellow tones of incandescent bulbs, providing a more natural, warm glow.
