The Iconic Design of the Anglepoise Lamp
Discover Anglepoise lighting, a true iconic British brand renowned for its pioneering adjustable desk lamps that balance precision engineering with minimalist design.
The history of the Anglepoise lamp began in 1932 when automotive engineer George Carwardine inventing a new kind of spring. Originally intended to be part of a vehicle suspension system, this inspired the design for a lamp that could be positioned where needed with a pivoting arm. In 1935 a 3 spring Anglepoise desk lamp was created - the now iconic Original 1227.

Original 1227 Desk Lamp

Known as the first Anglepoise lamp, the Original 1227 was designed back in 1935 by George Carwardine, however that design looked slightly different to the version on sale today. It wasn’t until around 1938 where certain design elements were added which we recognise today such as: removal of small shade vents which appeared on older models and the introduction of the two-step base which is consistent with all Original 1227 lamps today.
Because the design hasn’t changed a huge amount since the early 1900s it has an instantly recognisable profile and an extremely functional design making the Anglepoise Original 1227 one of the world’s most well-loved desk lamps.
The modern version of this desk lamp is available with 3 base options, choose between a weighted base, desk insert or a desk clamp. Available in a monochromatic palette, its industrial style makes it a versatile choice or any interior.
