History
Beginning life as an Oxford-based home lighting brand, Original BTC’s portfolio of elegant floor lights, pendants and table lamps is a celebration of classic British design.
Established by Peter Bowles in 1990, Original BTC is a family-owned company with six family members directly involved in the business. Through visits to his father’s manufacturing facilities as a child, Peter was inspired by the clean lines of traditional factory fittings and the versatility of mid-century style. As such, Peter was one of the first designers to use bone china shades for lighting and capture the appeal of industrial styling. Today, Original BTC has grown to become a global name, firmly cementing itself in the British design scene with Peter designing the company’s products in conjunction with his son Charlie, who became Director in 2012.
Product Style
A symbol of British craftsmanship and contemporary design, each Original BTC piece is the result of unrivalled attention to detail. In 2002, the brand rescued a bone china factory in Stoke-on-Trent and began crafting its beautiful lights there, and in 2011 saved a metal works in Birmingham to create its metal lighting there. Their signature level of quality and dedication to British design was honoured with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade. Offering a unique, diverse range of beautifully crafted pendants, wall lights and lamps created using only the finest raw materials, the brand draws inspiration from Britain’s rich post-industrialisation history. By fusing this design history with modern tastes and trends, Original BTC produces a portfolio of classic industrial lighting infused with an innovative, design-led twist.
