Hans J Wegner

One of the 20th century’s most prolific designers, Danish designer Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) designed over 500 different chairs during his lifetime. Often referred to as the “King of Chairs'', over 100 of Wegner’s designs were put into mass production and many are still icons today.

Beginning his career as a cabinetmaker in 1931, Wegner subsequently studied architecture at the Copenhagen School of Arts & Crafts before finally working as a trainee under Arne Jacobsen and Erik Muller’s office. He opened his own studio in 1943 with the goal of “making unexceptional things of an exceptionally high quality”. Bestowing each piece he designed with insightful craftsmanship - a deep respect for the properties of wood and joinery techniques - Wegner was dedicated to showcasing the inner workings of a piece of furniture by stripping it of anything superfluous. He was obsessed with pure aesthetical construction, and this is a trademark of all of his pieces.

In 1949 Wegner established a partnership with Carl Hansen & Søn, where he went on to design some of his most iconic creations that are revered to this day.

CH07 Shell Chair

Designed in 1963, the CH07 Shell Chair is an avant-garde masterpiece. Its wing-like seat and curved backrest sit atop three legs for an instantly recognisable silhouette. Crafted from beautiful form-pressed veneer, this warm, inviting chair - that almost looks like it is smiling at its sitter - is luxuriously upholstered in either leather or fabric. Striking from all angles, the Shell is a sumptuous design piece that will add elegance and comfort to any space.

CH24 Wishbone Chair

Inspired by a photograph of Danish Merchants sitting on Ming Dynasty chairs with never-before-seen wide seats and high backs, the CH24 Wishbone chair offers the ergonomic sensibility of the Chinese antique while maintaining a uniquely Danish aesthetic. Featuring a solid wood Y-shaped back, a gently-rounded, steam-bent frame, and an intricate hand-woven paper cord seat, the Wishbone offers comfort, stability and freedom of movement. A versatile chair for both home and office spaces, the iconic Wishbone has been handcrafted in Denmark to Wegner’s original specifications since 1950.

Wegner's The Pendant

A true design classic, The Pendant light is the product of a rare foray into lighting for Wegner. Specifically designed to be height adjustable, the handle of the light has been integrated as an attractive part of the design to enable the user to pull the lamp up and down without touching the shade. Made from wet painted aluminium the shade comes in four monochrome colours and hangs off a sleek nickel hanger and discreet cord. A masterpiece in functional design and craftsmanship.
