George Carwardine
George Carwardine
An acclaimed car engineer with a passion for spring mechanisms, this passion led George Carwardine to create one of the most successful and famous lighting designs of all time: the Anglepoise.
While developing new concepts for vehicle suspensions at his home in Bath in 1928, Carwardine created a mechanism that he realised had applications in other fields, especially task lighting. He joined forces with British manufacturer Herbert Terry & Sons for mass production of his design, and to this day the Anglepoise is still being produced.
